Ruins of Terror – Part 1
The night enveloped the trio in an oppressive darkness, the eerie silence only broken by their ragged breaths and the distant hum of the menacing plant. Kevin, Sarah, and Mark huddled together by the car, their minds racing to devise a plan to rescue Harry and escape this nightmare.
“Okay, we need to stay calm,” Kevin said, trying to steady his voice. “First, we need to find something to use as a weapon. We can’t go back there unarmed.”
Mark nodded, scanning the surroundings. “There might be something in the trunk. Let’s check it out.”
Sarah kept a wary eye on the ruins as Kevin and Mark rummaged through the trunk. They found a tire iron, a flashlight, and a rusty old crowbar. It wasn’t much, but it was better than nothing.

“These will have to do,” Kevin said, handing the crowbar to Mark and the flashlight to Sarah. “We need to stick together and be ready for anything.”
With weapons in hand, they cautiously made their way back towards the ruins. The darkness seemed to press in on them from all sides, amplifying the ominous humming that grew louder with each step. The sight of the towering plant, its tendrils writhing and pulsating with a sinister energy, sent chills down their spines.
“We have to be smart about this,” Sarah whispered, her grip tightening on the flashlight. “If we can distract the plant, maybe we can free Harry.”
Kevin nodded, his mind racing to come up with a plan. “Alright, Sarah, you shine the light on the plant and try to get its attention. Mark and I will go around and look for Harry.”
They moved into position, hearts pounding in unison. Sarah took a deep breath and switched on the flashlight, its beam cutting through the darkness and illuminating the monstrous plant. The plant reacted immediately, its tendrils writhing and twisting towards the light.
“Now, go!” Sarah urged, her voice barely above a whisper.
Kevin and Mark darted around the perimeter of the ruins, their eyes scanning the shadows for any sign of Harry. The plant’s tendrils lashed out towards the light, creating an opening for the two friends to search.
“Harry!” Mark called out, his voice echoing through the desolate landscape.
A faint, desperate cry answered them from deep within the ruins. “Help! Over here!”
Kevin and Mark followed the sound, their hearts pounding with hope and fear. They found Harry tangled in a mass of vines, his face pale and his eyes wide with terror.
“Hang on, Harry, we’re coming!” Kevin shouted, rushing forward with the tire iron.
Mark joined him, using the crowbar to pry the vines away from Harry’s body. The plant’s tendrils tightened their grip, resisting their efforts with an almost sentient malevolence. Harry’s breathing grew labored, and his eyes fluttered with exhaustion.
“We need to hurry!” Kevin urged, his muscles straining against the relentless vines.
Suddenly, the plant emitted a high-pitched screech, its tendrils thrashing violently. Sarah’s flashlight flickered as she struggled to keep the plant’s attention, but it was clear the creature was growing agitated.
“Kevin, Mark, hurry up!” Sarah yelled, panic creeping into her voice.
With a final surge of strength, Kevin and Mark managed to break the last of the vines holding Harry. They pulled him free and half-dragged, half-carried him away from the plant, which continued to thrash and writhe in a frenzy. The plant squirted bright-green chlorophyll from the split vines, the near fluorescent liquid oozing out and staining the ground around it.
“Go, go, go!” Kevin shouted, urging his friends towards the car. Just as he turned to run behind his friends, a bud on the plant suddenly blossomed. It let out a howl, releasing a cloud of dusty pink spores that Kevin inadvertently inhaled. He immediately began to cough, a dry, persistent hack that seemed to cling to his lungs.

They sprinted back, adrenaline fueling their desperate escape. The plant’s tendrils lashed out one last time, nearly wrapping around Kevin’s ankle before he yanked it free with a terrified shout. As they bolted through the dense underbrush, the car seemed impossibly far. A tendril struck inches from their feet, sending up a spray of dirt and leaves. With burning lungs and pounding hearts, they finally reached the road, collapsing against the vehicle. Gasping for breath, they exchanged wide-eyed glances at the still-quivering tendrils in the distance, the ruins barely visible through the trees.
Kevin’s cough continued, each wheeze scraping his throat. “Are you okay?” Sarah asked, her voice trembling as she tried to steady Kevin.
“I’m… I’m fine,” Kevin croaked, though his breathlessness suggested otherwise. His face was pale, and his eyes were watery, the spores clearly having an effect on him.
“Let’s get out of here,” Mark urged, casting nervous glances back at the thrashing plant. They piled into the car, the interior filling with the scent of fear and sweat. Kevin, still coughing, slid into the driver’s seat, fumbling for Harry’s keys. Sarah frantically retrieved them from Harry’s front-left pocket while Mark hastily placed their makeshift weapons on the floorboard.
As he turned the key, the engine roared to life, providing a brief but necessary reassurance. However, just as Kevin was about to drive off, he doubled over, coughing violently. A dark, moldy substance spewed from his mouth, the smell immediately filling the car with a rancid stench.
“Kevin!” Sarah screamed, reaching out to steady him as he convulsed.
Mark quickly grabbed his phone, attempting to call for help. The signal was weak, and the call kept cutting in and out. “Come on, come on,” he muttered, his voice edged with desperation.
Sarah tried her phone as well, her hands shaking. “We need help! Our friend is really sick!” she cried into the phone, but the connection was unstable, the dispatcher’s voice barely audible through the static. Her phone beeped, and the screen revealed the words “Call Disconnected.” Sarah frantically redialed.
Mark swiftly snatched Sarah’s phone from her trembling hands.
“Please, we’re lost near some old ruins. Our friend… attacked by a plant… he’s really sick!” Mark managed to gasp out, his words fading with the weak signal.
In the distance, the faint glimmer of headlights appeared, growing brighter as they approached. Mark and Sarah waved their arms frantically, screaming for help as the vehicle drew nearer.
“Over here! Please, we need help!” Mark shouted, his voice hoarse with desperation.

The car slowed, its beams cutting through the darkness. As it approached, the driver’s silhouette became visible, and the friends’ hope soared.
But as the headlights illuminated the scene, Harry let out a final, heart-wrenching scream before collapsing unconscious. Kevin’s cough worsened, his breaths coming and going with shallow gasps. Sarah and Mark were left in utter panic and fear as they tried to save their friends and escape the nightmare that had ensnared them.
The driver of the approaching car, seeing the desperate situation, stepped out cautiously. “What’s going on?” he called, his voice wary but concerned.
“Please, we need help!” Sarah cried. “Our friend is really sick, and we can’t get a signal out here!”
The driver hesitated for a moment before pulling out his own phone. “Let me see if I can get a better signal,” he said, dialing emergency services.
As the driver tried to make the call, Kevin’s condition accelerated rapidly. He collapsed against the steering wheel, his breaths coming in shallow gasps, the moldy substance still dripping from his mouth. Sarah and Mark’s panic reached a fever pitch as they tried to keep Kevin conscious.
“Stay with us, Kevin,” Sarah pleaded, tears streaming down her face.
The driver finally managed to get through to the dispatcher, his voice urgent. “We have a serious medical emergency. A group of people are in trouble near some old ruins. We need help immediately!”
“Calm down, sir,” the dispatcher replied, her voice professional but concerned. “Can you give me your exact location?”
“We’re on a dirt road, near some ancient ruins. I don’t know the exact coordinates, but it’s off Route 46, near an old abandoned farmstead,” the driver explained, glancing nervously at the friends.
“Alright, I’m dispatching emergency services to your location,” the dispatcher said. “Are there any injuries?”
“Yes, one of them is vomiting profusely. He’s vomiting black stuff and can’t breathe properly. It’s bad,” the driver responded, his eyes darting to Kevin, who was slumped against the steering wheel.
“Is anyone else injured?” the dispatcher asked, her tone steadying.
“Another one I believe to be unconscious,” the driver replied. “Everyone is scared and shaken up.”
“Okay, I need you to stay on the line with me,” the dispatcher instructed, their voice urgent. “Keep an eye on their conditions and try to keep the one awake and calm. If you haven’t done so already, please attempt to perform chest compressions on the friend who is unconscious. Help is on the way.”
As the driver relayed their location, he placed the phone on the speaker setting so the rest of the group could hear. The plant’s distant, ominous humming grew louder, as if it were drawing closer. The night seemed to close in around them, the weight of their dire situation pressing down on them.
“Can you describe what caused this?” the dispatcher asked, her voice now tinged with a hint of curiosity.

The driver nudged Sarah urgently, who then handed the phone to her. Immediately, he made his way towards Harry to perform chest compressions as recommended by the dispatcher. Taking a deep breath, Sarah began to speak, her voice trembling slightly. “It’s huge, with these writhing vines and strange, glowing bulbs. It released a cloud of pink spores that my friend Kevin inhaled,” she explained, casting a wary glance back toward the ruins.
“Alright, keep him as comfortable as possible until help arrives. If he becomes unresponsive, check his airway and breathing,” the dispatcher advised.
Sarah, overhearing the conversation, turned to Mark. “We need to keep Kevin awake. Talk to him, don’t let him fall unconscious.”
Mark nodded, leaning closer to Kevin. “Hey, buddy, stay with us. Help is coming. Just hang in there a little longer.”
Kevin’s eyes fluttered open, his breathing still labored. “It hurts,” he wheezed, his voice barely audible.
“I know, Kevin, but you have to stay strong,” Mark encouraged, his voice shaky but determined.
The dispatcher continued to provide instructions, her voice a lifeline in the encroaching darkness. “Emergency services are en route. They’ll be there soon. You’re doing great, just keep him talking.”
As the minutes dragged on, the driver kept the dispatcher updated on Kevin’s condition, the ominous humming of the plant growing ever louder. The driver paused momentarily from administering chest compressions to Harry, urging him, “Stay with me, buddy. Just a little longer until they get here.”
The night air grew colder, the sense of dread thickening around them.
“We’re almost there,” the dispatcher reassured. “Can you hear sirens yet?”
Just as they heard the sirens, the driver managed to dislodge something blocking Harry’s airways, allowing him to breathe again. Harry wheezed, releasing a cloud of spores. The driver, caught off guard, involuntarily inhaled them, causing a fit of uncontrollable coughing.
“Please hurry! I think something just made the person who stopped to help us sick. They just started coughing all of a sudden. I think Harry might be dead!” Sarah cried to the dispatcher.
The group strained their ears, and faintly, in the distance, the sound of approaching sirens pierced the night.
“I think I hear them,” Mark confirmed, a glimmer of hope in his voice.
“Good. Keep the line open until they arrive,” the dispatcher instructed. “You’re all going to be okay.”
Moments later, flashing red and blue lights appeared on the horizon, the sound of sirens growing louder. The friends’ tension eased slightly, relief washing over them as the emergency vehicles approached.

“I see them!” Sarah shouted excitedly.
The dispatcher stayed on the line until the first responders reached the scene. The paramedics rushed to Harry’s side, confirming his unfortunate demise. Turning their attention to Kevin, they quickly assessed his worsening condition as he began vomiting black and orange substance, eventually dry heaving. Recognizing the severity, the paramedics swiftly called for additional medical support to the scene.
“Thank you,” Sarah whispered into the phone, her voice choked with emotion.
“You’re welcome,” the dispatcher replied. “You’re in good hands now.”
The call ended, leaving Sarah and Mark to watch anxiously as Kevin, Harry, and the driver were loaded into separate ambulances. The paramedics worked swiftly but the second ambulance didn’t arrive at the same time as the first. Sarah and Mark gratefully accepted the help of the kind driver who had stopped, using their vehicle to follow the ambulances toward the hospital.
As they drove, tension hung thick in the air. The distant humming of the plant seemed to grow louder, unsettling them. They exchanged worried glances as they navigated the dark, winding road, the headlights of the ambulances flickering ahead.

Suddenly, Harry’s abdomen burst open inside the ambulance ahead, releasing a cloud of pink spores into the air. The mist filled the vehicle, causing the paramedics to cough and choke. In their disoriented state, the driver lost control of the ambulance, swerving wildly off the road.
The following ambulance promptly halted, its emergency lights flashing. Sarah and Mark watched in horror as the first ambulance lost complete control, throwing the large emergency vehicle into a chaotic frenzy.
Sarah and Mark’s hearts pounded as they witnessed the nightmarish scene unfold in front of them. The ambulance careened through the brush, crashing into a stand of trees. The impact was violent, metal twisting and glass shattering as the vehicle came to a sudden, jarring halt.
The ominous humming of the plant echoed through the night. Sarah and Mark were frozen in shock, their minds racing with fear and uncertainty. They knew that their journey was far from over, and the nightmare they faced was only just beginning.
